The Who, Why and What of Footy Dark Arts

Who
Hello, my name is William (Billy) Lai. In my spare time, I referee football matches, or I assess referees who referee football matches, or I instruct new referees who would like to referee football matches. Oh, I also enjoy watching football matches … heaps of football matches.

Why
Back in 2012 I started writing a weekly newspaper column called The Rational Ref, which attempted to discuss and explain—from a neutral perspective—certain incidents that occurred during football matches. The newspaper column ran for over 5 years and it became clear that common ‘dark’ themes repeated themselves such as cheating, diving, time wasting, nastiness and deceiving the referee.

What
Therefore, I decided to write a book called Football Dark Arts (also titled Soccer Dark Arts), which was published in 2020 by Meyer & Meyer Sport. So, that’s my story during the past decade or so. The book is available at Amazon, Waterstones and all good book sites.

Now
These days, dark arts are still prominent, if not more prominent than before. We need to talk about them and raise awareness of the dark arts. This site is a launch point to resources related to Footy Dark Arts.
